Plywood Grades Explained: MR vs BWR vs BWP (Marine)

Plywood in India is graded by how it behaves against moisture, and the grade is set by the adhesive used to bond the veneers — not by how the surface looks. Choosing one grade too low is the most common and most expensive mistake in furniture work, because the failure shows up two years later as delamination.
The three grades you will actually be offered
Almost all interior joinery uses one of three grades. The difference is the glue line, which is what fails first when moisture gets in.

MR is not "waterproof" — it is commercial ply
MR grade is often sold as "commercial plywood". It resists humidity, not water. Splash it repeatedly and the glue line lets go.
It is the right, economical choice for wardrobe interiors, bed frames and anything in a dry room. It is the wrong choice anywhere near a sink, a washing machine, or an external wall that sweats in monsoon.
Where BWP genuinely pays for itself
BWP (IS:710) costs meaningfully more, so use it where water is a certainty rather than a risk: the sink cabinet, the bottom shelf of a utility unit, bathroom vanities.
A common and sensible compromise on a kitchen is BWP for the base units and BWR for the wall units, since wall cabinets rarely see standing water.
Thickness: what each is normally used for
Thickness is chosen by span and load, not by grade.

How to check what you are actually being sold
Grade is claimed far more often than it is delivered. A few checks that cost nothing:
- Look for the IS number stamped on the sheet edge — IS:710 for BWP, IS:303 for MR/BWR.
- Check the edge: quality ply shows even plies with no gaps or overlaps between veneers.
- The sheet should feel dense and consistent, without hollow patches when tapped.
- Ask for the ISI mark and the manufacturer's warranty in writing.

Is BWP plywood the same as marine plywood?
In practice, yes — BWP to IS:710 is what is sold as marine plywood in India. Both refer to phenol-formaldehyde bonded plywood that withstands prolonged water contact.
Can I use MR plywood in a kitchen if it is not near the sink?
For wall units away from the sink it will usually survive, but Indian kitchens are humid and steam reaches everything. BWR is a small price increase for a much longer life, and most carpenters will recommend it.
What thickness plywood for kitchen shutters?
18 mm is standard for shutters. Below that they can bow over a long span, particularly on tall units.
